The Millennial Generation - What Is Their Definition And What Have They Achieved

While known as Generation Y and the "echo boomers" much of this population likes to be identified as the name that they gave to themselves: the millennial generation. This class is typically defined as those born from around 1980 until the end of the century. They grow up in the new 21st century and this is how they take their name. A number of people in the millennial generation also like to distinguish themselves evidently from Generation X.

The millennial generation is usually named the echo boomers because they are also the result of a baby boom. While there is disagreement about exactly how many years to mark as part of this generation, the millennials will calculate somewhere between 76 million and 80 million that makes them the same size as the baby boomers if not a bit larger. Just like the baby boomers, a group this large cannot help but have a significant impact on all phases of life in America.

Although the baby boomers were the result of postwar prosperity and the Cold War and the Space Race, this millennial generation is the outcome of a more unstable economy and the age of computers and digital technology. Baby boomers were to adapt to rapidly progressing technologies and use them while this newer demographic was immersed in the computer age almost from birth. They do not truly know a world without mobiles and personal computers and the web.

This millennial or Y generation is more likely to come from a family having a working mom and to come from a divorced family. Rapidly advancing technologies also suggest that many jobs get obsolete and continuing education and teaching is absolutely essential. While their parents and grandparents usually wanted to keep a job for years if not their entire career, this is not the situation.

Not only is the millennial generation more prone to change jobs several times in their working times, they are likely to change the whole direction of their careers to find a match in an increasingly limited job sector. A college degree is not anymore a guarantee of an easy hire and a decent paying position and underemployment as well as unemployment is a grave concern for this demographic.
