In Town -- The easiest to reach is Playa Los Muertos, just south of the Rio Cuale. The Playa Boca de Tomatlan, just down the road, has quite a few palapa restaurants where you can unwind for the day -- you buy drinks, snacks, or a meal, and they allow you to utilize the chairs and palapa shade. Las Animas, Quimixto, and Yelapa beaches offer a true sense of seclusion; and are reachable solely by water. They are larger than Mismaloya, will offer you intriguing hikes, horseback riding to jungle waterfalls, and are similarly set up with restaurants along a beautiful beach. North of Town -- Most of the northern coastline from Bucerias to Punta Mita is a succession of sandy coves alternating with rocky inlets. For years the beaches to the north, with lengthy, clean breaks, happen to have been the popular place for surfers. The broad sandy stretches at Playa Anclote, Playa Piedras Blancas, and Playa Destiladeras, all with palapa restaurants, have made them popular among residents looking to find an easy getaway. Blue-footed booby birds (discovered only here, and in the Galapagos) are often seen along the islands' rugged coast, and giant mantas, sea turtles, and vibrant tropical fish swim amidst the coral cliffs. The islands are honeycombed with caves and private beaches--including the beautiful Playa de Amor which only arises at low tide. Humpback whales congregate around these islands during the winter months. You can also visit these islands on board one of the many daily charters which depart from the cruise-ship terminal. Above all, Puerto Vallarta beaches can fulfill a variety of expectations from one extreme to another.
