There was a time when dentures were worn only by older people. It was a humiliation if you needed to wear dentures even though you were still quite young.
Why there was such a stigma attached to a young person having to wear dentures is not fully known, but there clearly was.
In the past dentures were not so attractive nor were they comfortable. In the 1700's dentures were made of wood. Can you imagine how difficult they must have been to wear? Following the wooden dentures; dentures were made of vulcanized rubber with bone or glass teeth set into them. These were not as light-weight as they are today. Today's dentures are light. The denture itself comes with plastic which is a chemical composition of polymer and monomer. You have a choice of what kind of teeth you would like to have in your dentures, for example, bone, plastic, porcelain, etc.
If you do not want to have a denture you can decide on having an implant. The implant is also in fact considered to be a denture. To prepare you for an implant the doctor may set screws in place that are attached to the jaw. When the teeth are removed the teeth are set into the open ridge and attached to the screws. This makes the denture permanent. Another form of implant is the one piece denture that is attached to screws.
Although the implanted dentures are really easy to get used to and to clean up, you do have to see the doctor at least once every six months so that he or she can do an in depth cleaning and make sure that the denture has not loosened.
Implants are great but they are also quite expensive. There is a lot involved in getting implanted dentures. To have the screws set into the jaw is a surgical procedure which takes place before the actual extraction. The denture, the type of denture we are all familiar with, can cost close to fifteen hundred dollars. On the other hand, implants, depending on whether you are implanting all or just a few, can cost from three thousand to ten thousand dollars.
Most insurance plans do not cover implants therefore; it is a good idea to contact your insurance provider to see if implants are covered in your insurance policy. This should be done before you make a decision to have implanted dentures. If you have Medicare your dental work is not covered except for extractions.
Dentures have come a long way since the 1700s, and so has dentistry itself. Besides dentures we now have caps, crowns, fillings, restorations, a lot of other ways of saving the tooth before it comes to actually having to have it extracted. Extraction can be made easier and less painful then it once was. But in spite of the new and almost painless dentistry, many of us are still hesitant when it comes to going to the dentist and usually wait until the last minute to have a bad tooth looked at and taken care of.
